Not to be repetitive, but what the hell is wrong with men?
You'd think that meeting them on a dating site would imply that they were interested in dating you. Apparently this is not the case.
I was supposed to see this guy I've been dating for over a month, lets call him X, who finally had 2 days off in a row, Sunday and Monday (Monday being today). Friday he texts me: "Looking forward to Sunday Monday so we can hang out." Guess what? It's Monday and I haven't heard a word from him since.
And so begins the sordid tale of my recent dating experiences.
Then there was P, who would invite me to fancy events and never follow through. One of them was to be at the Met Museum, a very black tie event for which I would need a very black tie, floor length dress. He said, it's in 2 weeks, I'll send you the information, let's go together. I said, I will have to get a new dress. He said, it's gonna be fun!
That was 2 months ago. The dress is hanging, unworn, in my closet. He still texts me, but never mentions the party and never asks me out.
And lets not forget K, who frequently goes on vacations to LA and Tahoe, texting me about once a week. You would think that someone who was interested in you would make damn sure that you wouldn't run off and find someone else why they were "hanging out" 3000 miles away.
Not to be an asshole, but I can't understand why men feel that I am so terrible that they must cut off all contact with me all of the sudden. I'm not clingy, I'm not mean, I'm decent looking, and someday I may have a job with an actual income. I'm not exactly sure what it is that will prevent them from fleeing into the night and, apparently, tossing their cell phones into the bushes to better ignore me with. Heaven forbid I should send them a text to inquire about their continued existence after not hearing from them for 3 days.
I realize that it's a slippery slope down bitter highway, and as such, I am refraining from contacting any more men until conditions improve (meaning, the urge to punch every man I see in the face has subsided).
Males of the world, the jig is up. In the 21st Century there is no excuse, short of your own death, not to contact someone you're interested in, particularly when you've established some semblance of a relationship. Please have the courtesy to at least send an "It's not you, it's me" text message.

She is the best thing that's ever been mine
As you guys know, my sweet little Minny passed away about a month ago.
Minny was 16 years old, and the best feline companion and friend that anyone could ask for. I remember the day she arrived. My aunt and uncle brought her to our house. I remember being 6 years old and seeing this tiny little creature, all ears, come out of her cage and run straight into a cabinet, shaking with fear. After much coaxing, Minny eventually came out of the cabinet and became an integral part of our family.
I have very few memories before Minny. She was there when my parents were together, when they got divorced, and through all my best and worst moments. She always appeared regal, and could not be bothered with kittenish play. It was easy to forget that she was a cat, except that she loved her shrimp and ham. She was like a shrimp savant. If there was shrimp in the house, she would stand in the kitchen and stare at my mother until she got the hint. If Minny was declined shrimp, she would meow until someone finally gave in. I hope there is shrimp in heaven.
She had her routines too. In the morning, when my Mom would wake up, Minny insisted on sitting on her shoulder while she watched tv. She did this everyday for many years. In the summer, she liked to sit outside in the sun.
And when you were sad, she'd come and sit next to you, and purr against your leg. (If you had a fever, she'd offer her sympathy by sitting directly on top of you, because, hey, it was a really warm place to sit).
She was always gentle and patient.
She was the most wonderful, most beautiful, and the best kitty girl there ever was. We all miss her terribly.
Here's to you Minny. We love you!

Ghost?
My Grandma Lenahan was an excellent grandmother. I used to call her every week. She passed away over 7 years ago. My grandma and I had a lot in common. We have the same hands. A shoe-shopping fetish extreme enough that it almost puts Imelda Marcos to shame (in fact, my grandmother bought a new pair of shoes the day she died). A love of mystery novels. A love of fashion. A love of vacations that don't require a lot of schlepping (i.e.: nice hotels, good food). We also both love Taster's Choice instant coffee. This is something that I started drinking about 3 years ago and fell in love with. When I mentioned this to my Aunt Jeannie, she said "No kidding! Your Grandma wouldn't drink any other kind of coffee!"
In these shared traits, I am constantly reminded of my grandmother. But the weird thing is, the other day I was eating toast with butter. This is something I do very frequently. And for some reason, the taste of it made me think of my Grandma. I thought that was kind of weird, but I thought nothing of it. Then later that night, thinking thoughts that had nothing to do with my Grandma, I left my apartment and the hallway was filled with the smell of my Grandmother's perfume. I have no idea what kind of perfume she wore, but I could recognize the smell anywhere. I've lived here for years, and I've never smelled her perfume before. It was really strange, but also really comforting.
This morning I asked my mom if Grandma ever made me toast, and she told me that between the ages of 3 and 5, everytime I saw my Grandma I asked her to make me toast. This was something I have no recollection of.
Memory is a strange thing. I realize that it is a very odd thing to be reminded about one's grandmother by toast. And while I tend not to believe such things, I can't help but think that just maybe, I had a friendly visitor.

Breaking up is hard to do
Evan broke up with me the other night.
Hypothetical future children got in the way. He wants them, I'm pretty sure I don't, and this is a situation in which compromise is not an option.
So there I am, at the Mets game, having just had my Diet Coke confiscated by security, only to be broken up with by Evan due to my frigid womb. And then I'm crying at the Mets game (and not just because sports are the devil), and he's crying (even though the Mets were winning), and the whole scene is just really way too emotional for a non-sports related issue at a baseball game.
I can't imagine loving any man ever again, or even seeing another man and not smacking him, to be quite honest, but hopefully that will pass. The good thing is that we decided to remain friends, which makes it seem less horrible, because we are very close and have been since we started dating. And in a sadistic way, I'm glad he cried a lot too, because at least that way I know it wasn't super-easy to ditch me.
But tomorrow we're going to a wedding together because his friend had to rearrange stuff earlier to fit in Evan + guest, so I'd feel bad not going. I think the hardest part is that when you're in a relationship for awhile, and things are going well, you have this vision of the future, and what your life is going to be like. And then all of the sudden, its shattered, and it's very frightening.
For a long time, I'd really thought that I found the one. I think I'm ok, but I still feel like I got run over by a truck.

Surreality
So, it's kind of weird when your feelings on procreation end up on Cosmo radio, particularly when you had no idea that they were being discussed. Evan told me at dinner last night that he'd gone on his friend's radio show to talk about my lack of maternal instincts. I don't really mind (no one knows who they're talking about), but it's just weird to find out. The following is the details that I found (after much googling) from a Cosmo-obsessed blogger:
"Evan’s girlfriend Katie does not want to have kids, and he does. He feels like he is at a crossroads. Evan was a topic of conversation yesterday, and he listened to part of the show’s replay. Patrick called Evan to see what he thought about Monday’s discussion. Evan hasn’t talked to many people about this situation. He said that the callers had good points that got him thinking. However, Evan still hasn’t decided what to do, and still has not talked to Katie about it. Katie’s friends say that she is crazy, and that she will want to have kids in the future. As for the calls yesterday, they were about 50/50-some callers said they should end the relationship, and the other half said to stick with it. Evan said that Katie is his best friend and she makes him happy. It would be hard for him to leave her at this point in their relationship. Evan would like to hook up with Danielle Fishel though!"
I would be sad if he dumped me for Topanga Lawrence (or any other former child-star). Or at all. But I still have no desire to be a parent.

Jersey Girl
So, today, for the very first time, I took the Path train to NJ to see my cousin Adin's new place and my Aunt Jeannie and Uncle Dick.
Meanwhile, earlier in the day, I went to Evan's to meet him with breakfast because he'd been gone for 5 days and I missed him. He's obsessed with egg-whites, so I got him an egg white wrap with cheese. When I walked into his apartment, it smelled soooo bad because he forgot to take the garbage out before he left. So I took it out and returned to find Evan falling asleep in his chair, COVERED IN CHEESE. Seriously, it was all over his face and arms and shirt. I have no idea how it happened. It was hilarious and also really gross. Although my love cannot be chased away by dairy-products, I have to admit that I was kind of happy to head to Jersey. (I prefer my boyfriend when he is not wearing his food).
Anyway, NJ was really neat, because, for better or worse, my whole Dad's side of the family has lived in Jersey at some time or another, and my Aunt Jeannie is the keeper of the family stories. We drove along the streets, and she pointed out the street on which my great-grandparents met (my great-grandfather thought my soon-to-be great grandmother was Jewish, so after 5 years of confusion he finally realized she was Lutheran and that was close enough to Catholic for him), lots of other important family-event locations, and the cemetery where nearly all of our relatives are buried. Macabre fun! Then we had an awesome Italian dinner, which was super-yummy and totally made my day.

Mid-Finals Madness Post!
So, I have one more final to go, which is a miracle, but also crappy because, um, I have to take a test soon. So, I thought I would be semi-productive in my procrastination and update my much-neglected blog.
My Life Updates!
1) While listening to Pandora, I realized the real lyrics of this song, and was really alarmed that I'd never questioned why I thought they were saying "Fly away, on my cell phone"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fcRa5Z6LmU
2) Saw Neil Patrick Harris (of "Dougie Howser" and "How I Met Your Mother" fame) coming out of the subway at Times Square. He is so hot (and yes I know he's gay but since when has that stopped me from dreaming?)!!
3) Probably failed my Civil Procedure exam. No really. It was that disastrous.
4) Due to #3, have been spending a lot of time Googling alternative legal careers. Most of them involve ambulance-chasing, which, since CitiBank thinks it's fun to send me "optional" loan statements, is sounding like a more and more appealing option.
I've found that there is an inverse relationship between your level of school debt and your ideals (as the former goes up, the latter goes down). So I totally understand if you'll never speak to me again if my office number one day is 1-800-SLIPANDFALL
5) But, on the bright side, have been eating a lot of cupcakes and hanging out with Kat (hi Kat!), which has been super awesome!!
6) I found Anna Sui sunglasses in my Dad's car, because a customer left them in the restaurant he works at and never claimed them. My dad thought, cool, new sunglasses, and did not realize their designer, vintage appeal. I feel bad that now he has to squint, though : (
7) I can't stop watching reruns of "The Hills". (I know so bad!!!!!)
8) I miss Evan because he's in Florida, but we are going to San Diego in July which I'm really excited about! So from now until then I'm stocking up on self-tanner so as not to blind fellow beach-goers with my ghostly-paleness.
9) I have a neighbor who enjoys putting up passive-aggressive signs up in the garbage room. The last one read "Meat scraps are NOT recycling!", which is true. But the new one is downright angry, "If you don't know how to recycle, you should not live in this building". Whoa.
While I totally agree with the note-leaving person, not only in an eco-friendly way, but also in a concerned-about-potential-roach-infestation way, I feel like angry notes are not the way to go. I fear that whoever the moron is who doesn't realize that pork-chops aren't recyclable will step-up their improper recycling campaign in retaliation, and nothing will ever be solved. Drama.
10) Kiley told my dad that he should adopt a 9 year old British girl. Because she wants to have a sister her own age, and she would prefer one with an accent.
Anyways, that is all that's going on here. Despite the law-fail, everything is going pretty well!

Just though you should know...
My boyfriend drunkenly confessed to me last night that as a child he was in Howard Stern's "Private Parts" (ummm, the movie; he was not actually in Stern's anatomy, I sincerely hope). He played Howard's best friend as a child in one scene, and had to say the N word. He felt so bad about it that he donated all of the money he made from the movie to the United Negro College Fund.
So I searched his name on IMDB and found that he was in 2 other movies as well: Tromeo and Juliet, and Steam. Apparently the former is some kind of Shakespearean soft-core porn featuring some kind of man-pig monster, at least according to Wikipedia.
I really do not know what to do with this revelation.

Ok, I know this is getting to be a theme and I don't mean it to be but...
I was re-writing (ewwww I know!!!!) a paper, and as self-appointed leader of the procrasti-Nation (too lazy to actually form a group, haha) I decided that I couldn't possibly go on unless I listened to this Shania Twain song that was stuck in my head.
Part of the reason that I had to listen to it was because I remember seeing the music video in the late 90s and thinking, someday I shall wear that awesome leopard-outfit. I had it in my head that was what the really cool people wore. I honestly have no idea why, because I'm pretty sure that even leopards don't wear that much animal print at once. But I digress...
So anyway, enjoy Shania Twain's musical talent (fantastic!) and (dubious)wardrobe-choices!

The Burrito Song!
Ok, I really really don't know why, but this song has been stuck in my head for the past several hours. For no reason. And the only part of it I could remember was "you were eating a burrito...". I assumed that it was because I really like burritos. But then I remembered that this song was super-great at the beginning of the millenium, so I decided to share it with you all. Clearly, my subconscious is nostalgic for the music of yore.

It's De-libi-tating...
Nothing terribly exciting is going on (which I think is usually a good thing), so here are some random tid-bits:
The other day in my Constitutional Law class, my professor exhibited the trademark sensitivity of the greatest generation and asked one of my peers "are you dyslexic?"
Of course, he didn't mean to offend, as he told us the next day. Apparently a dyslexic student told him after class that they were offended by the comment, which is understandable. But I have to give you a visual of this exchange. True to Constitutional Law professor form, he wears a tweed jacket and bow tie, and is far enough over the hill that when he said his specialty was 1860s Constitutional theory, we all thought "no kidding". But he's really a sweet guy, so he apologized and requested that if any of us found anything he said offensive to please let him know.
It's funny to imagine him offending anyone (I mean, besides the other day), but I plan on spending the rest of the semester listening for any potentially offensive remarks.
Meanwhile, although I flatter myself to be a fairly functional person, I am on the fast-track to being a cat lady. I know none of you are surprised.
While I do not plan on being a kitty adopter anytime soon, my mom got a new kitten named Penny. Penny is very adorable. Of course, my heart belongs to Min. Min just turned 16. We thought she had diabetes, and so we took her to the vet. Of course I can't be a normal person at the vet, and burst into tears as soon as they picked her up to take her (ew rectal) temperature. I can't deal with it. Luckily, she doesn't have diabetes, but a UTI which is being treated.
However, Min's happiness was marred not only by her urethra's betrayal, but by human betrayal in bringing home a kitten. Min is very unhappy with Penny. It seems like she is unwilling to think of Penny as a cat, but as a toy that we've decided to amuse ourselves with. Penny jumps and runs and attacks shadows and stuff, so it's fair enough that Min, a cat who has never been around other cats, doesn't believe in Penny's felinity. The problem is, Min is deaf and her eyesight isn't what it used to be. So she can't detect Penny unless Penny is running behind her (she sounds like an elephant, so there are vibrations) or in Min's (sadly limited) field of vision. This is Penny's third week there, and Min has been very patient. Penny chased her, Min hissed and walked away. Penny drank Min's water, Min walked into the other room. She even shoved Min with both paws, and Min hissed at her and walked away.
But then one day there was turkey.
Both cats got turkey in separate corners of the house. Having finished hers, Penny decided to investigate Min's. Fed up (literally, haha) Min slapped Penny across the face. I'm fairly certain that Penny is undeterred. But at least Min has a shot at a day-time Emmy.

If the Jets win tonight...
I know! I never thought my plans would rely on the outcome of a football game either, but here I am. So if the Jets win tonight, I am accompanying Evan to the great city of Indianapolis next weekend. It's a dream come true.
Lest you think, wow, what a great boyfriend, he's taking you on vacation, I must explain the context of the invite. He only invited me because we were playing Wii Tennis the other day, and for some reason, he decided to grab my stomach and say "awww you do have a bit of a belly".
There is something seriously wrong with men. Even if I had 12 chins, that comment still wouldn't be okay. Besides, it's winter and the extra fat is there to protect me from perishing of hypothermia. Yeah!
Feeling lucky to live another day, he apologized and asked if I'd go to Indianapolis with him if the Jets win. I know what you're thinking... this hardly makes up for it. L.A., Vegas, SF, even Boston, maybe. I've never been to Indianapolis, so it could be great, but at this point I'm still pretty pissed at him. But this is a recession, after all, so I don't think I can bargain his egregious misstep for a better vacation ; )
So, Friday I may or may not be in Indianapolis. Please compile a list of souvenirs you'd like from there just in case!!

The 10s!
So, it is 2010, which is totally ridiculous. And in the spirit of ridiculousness, I will name my top 10 picks for the height of absurdity of the first decade of the millennium.
10. Y2K- We were thisclose to forcibly becoming Amish.
9. 2000 Campaign- We didn't have a president for a long time!!
8. Terrorism and War- Stupid and destructive no matter the reason. And not unique to the decade, obviously.
7. Hurricanes, Tsunamis, and... Chimpanzee attacks.
6. We graduated middle school, high school and college. Weird!!
5. No flying cars- ??????
4. Reality television.
3. Bernie Madoff and the Great Recession. Finally appreciating those FDIC-guarantees displayed in bank windows.
2. Neil Patrick Harris not winning the Emmy in 2009.
1. Twitter. I really don't get it.
Of course, there are other things of less importance that I continue to dwell on- the loss of some beloved TV shows (Friends, Sex and the City, Frasier, etc.), the Brad and Jen split (I can't move past it!), the prevalence of blogs (exhibit A), the disappearance of CDs (whoa!).
But, my coffee mug is half-full today, so I will also provide you with a list of my top 10 moments of the decade that was, in no particular order.
10. Y2K disaster NOT occurring! I <3 modern conveniences!
9. Making new friends but still having wonderful old friends (not that you guys are OLD!!).
8. Living in NYC!!
7. Going to Law School (of course this could turn out to be a very expensive failed-experiment.....)
6. eHarmony- seriously, Evan is a sweetheart. I totally suggest the site.
5. Barack Obama! Regardless of what side of the political spectrum you fall on, the election was legendary
4. A better world image for the US starting to brew....
3. The Wii- it's awesome!
2. Great TV! How I Met Your Mother, 30 Rock, Ugly Betty, The Office, Community, Parks and Recreation, etc. And all on Hulu!!
1. Honestly, that we all made it through the decade and seem to be happy with where we are in life.
It wasn't by any means an easy decade- there were some seriously hard moments for all of us over the past 10 years, but I am so impressed with where all of you guys are in life. (Ry, Kat, and Laur, if she ever reads my blog). You've proven yourselves to be incredibly strong and remarkable people, and I'm so grateful and proud to call you my friends.
I love you all!
Here's to a healthy, happy, and fun new year!
