The other day in my Constitutional Law class, my professor exhibited the trademark sensitivity of the greatest generation and asked one of my peers "are you dyslexic?"
Of course, he didn't mean to offend, as he told us the next day. Apparently a dyslexic student told him after class that they were offended by the comment, which is understandable. But I have to give you a visual of this exchange. True to Constitutional Law professor form, he wears a tweed jacket and bow tie, and is far enough over the hill that when he said his specialty was 1860s Constitutional theory, we all thought "no kidding". But he's really a sweet guy, so he apologized and requested that if any of us found anything he said offensive to please let him know.
It's funny to imagine him offending anyone (I mean, besides the other day), but I plan on spending the rest of the semester listening for any potentially offensive remarks.
Meanwhile, although I flatter myself to be a fairly functional person, I am on the fast-track to being a cat lady. I know none of you are surprised.
While I do not plan on being a kitty adopter anytime soon, my mom got a new kitten named Penny. Penny is very adorable. Of course, my heart belongs to Min. Min just turned 16. We thought she had diabetes, and so we took her to the vet. Of course I can't be a normal person at the vet, and burst into tears as soon as they picked her up to take her (ew rectal) temperature. I can't deal with it. Luckily, she doesn't have diabetes, but a UTI which is being treated.
However, Min's happiness was marred not only by her urethra's betrayal, but by human betrayal in bringing home a kitten. Min is very unhappy with Penny. It seems like she is unwilling to think of Penny as a cat, but as a toy that we've decided to amuse ourselves with. Penny jumps and runs and attacks shadows and stuff, so it's fair enough that Min, a cat who has never been around other cats, doesn't believe in Penny's felinity. The problem is, Min is deaf and her eyesight isn't what it used to be. So she can't detect Penny unless Penny is running behind her (she sounds like an elephant, so there are vibrations) or in Min's (sadly limited) field of vision. This is Penny's third week there, and Min has been very patient. Penny chased her, Min hissed and walked away. Penny drank Min's water, Min walked into the other room. She even shoved Min with both paws, and Min hissed at her and walked away.
But then one day there was turkey.
Both cats got turkey in separate corners of the house. Having finished hers, Penny decided to investigate Min's. Fed up (literally, haha) Min slapped Penny across the face. I'm fairly certain that Penny is undeterred. But at least Min has a shot at a day-time Emmy.
